Sondheim and Dench
I was in the mood for some Stephen Sondheim music today and found plenty to choose from on You Tube. I couldn't resist this Judi Dench version of Send in the Clowns. What a combination of talents.
Dame Judi is marvellous indeed and an inspiration to us as we attempt to grow gracefully older!
I have tried to discover who the actor is in the scene but he gets no credit on any of the reviews of that 2008 concert. I don't think it is Barry Foster from the Van der Valk series but I may be mistaken. I'll keep searching.
Breussel, thank you for that information about the gorgeous Barry Foster. I feel confident that Carole has correctly identified the singer in the clip as David Kernan.
Carole is absolutely right. Check out this page devoted to Dame Judy: http://www.djdchronology.com/jukeboxmusic.htm (scroll down to Recitals/Public Performances)

I've never, ever heard such a moving rendition of this song. There's something about an older person doing it that makes it perfect. And my God, she acted the words - not something that many singers can do. It felt like she meant them, that they weren't just words in a song. Oh, a wonderful four minutes, Maureen. Thank you so much.
Isn't it marvelous. Dame Judy makes me feel as though I am hearing it for the first time. Beautiful staging too. Thank you.

I love Judy Dench. I just think she's marvellous.
ReplyDeleteIs the actor with her the chap from "Vandervalk"?

I think it might be David Kernan. He has done a lot of Sondheim.

I think you are probably right, Carole. I remember him as a very handsome young man, forgetting that he has grown older, too!
ReplyDeleteLovely Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember David Kernan as a handsome young man too....he's still doing well in the ageing game though, isn't he?
ReplyDeleteP.S That last post was me again....Carole. !
ReplyDeleteBarry Foster (a great favourite of mine) died in 2002

Bruessel, what a wonderful site - I have bookmarked it for lots of future visits. Have you watched the 16 going on 17 clip? It is so funny.

ReplyDeleteYes indeed, Nan, you feel there is a whole story behind the song. I just love Dame Judi.
