La Stupenda

Dame Joan Sutherland 1927 - 2010.  The gretaest voice of the twentieth century.

  1. What a coincidence that you have posted a piece about Joan Sutherland. I was with an Australian group here in Kalymnos when a lovely lady from the Sidney area was talking about her. She knew Dame Joan personally and related to me a few stories of their time together.
However, regarding your comment about her being the greatest of the century it could be construed as a little contentious. For me Maria Callas had a greater effect upon the emotion with a purer tone. Sutherland was more powerful and versatile. Greatness was in them both but the greatest is a very subjective statement.

  2. Also Mo Listen to Callas singing "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca and you will find 2 notes that go straight through you. No-one I have heard could, or can, produce such perfect pitch and tone. Listen and recognise what I am talking about. Superb!

  4. This is beautiful. Thank you! My husband's brother sings opera and has often preformed with Peter Nero in the city of Philadelphia. My husband's family is quite musical and I've learned to appreciate a lot of it because of them.

  5. I am glad that you all enjoyed the video clip. As my (anonymous) brother points out, there are other contenders for the title of greatest soprano. There are 7 or 8 wonderful singers who have made the world a more wonderful place for the rest of us.

  6. La Stupenda indeed! I'm planing to include a tribute in my next post too.

I loved her voice - and loved Callas's too, for very different reasons. As for 20th century greats, I would have to include the majestic Jessye Norman, another truly remarkable voice, in terms of both technique and emotion.
