Free book draw

Another Virago Modern Classic to give away: this time a slim volume by Rebecca West and another of my favourites. The Return of the Soldier was her first novel, published in 1918 when Rebecca West was 24 years old. (The link to Amazon shows the 1980 version with the lovely green cover, but it is the latest edition, pictured here that I'm giving away.)

The soldier is sent home from the trenches of the First War, suffering from shell-shock. Waiting for him are his beautiful wife, Kitty and his devoted cousin, Jenny, the narrator of the story. But the soldier only recalls Jenny as his childhood playmate and he doesn't remember Kitty or their ten years of marriage at all. He only remembers Margaret, the girl he loved fifteen years earlier. The women have to choose whether to leave him as he is or to bring him back to the reality of his life.

This is rightly described on the cover as 'a small masterpiece'. If you would like a chance to win it, leave a "Yes please" or "Count me in" here or on any other post in the next few days. I'll make the draw at the end of next week. Good luck!
