Book of the Month Draw#1

How about this for cleverness? I have learned the secret of bumping a post back up to the top of the page! (Thank you, beloved Son).

I have a tendency to buy sets of books, usually when they are 'special offers'. As a result, I find I have duplicate copies of some of my favourite titles and I'm going to offer them to anyone who promises them a good and loving home - oh, isn't that just for puppies and kittens? I suppose I have the same protective instinct for my books.

I have a lot of Virago Modern Classics and prefer the old green covers, so I'm going to offer the newer versions and keep my well-thumbed favourites. I'll put one up each month and Elizabeth von Arnim's The Enchanted April seems to be the most appropriate one to start.

If you would like a chance to win this pristine copy, leave a comment on any post between now and Monday 14th April and I will draw a name from my wedding bonnet the next morning. I'm happy to post the book to any country.
P.S. No profound or even complimentary comment necessary, if you'd like a chance for the book a simple 'Count me in' will do.

  1. In what sounds like an extraordinarily contrived coincidence, I was just about to order a copy. So, for now, I'll take my chance in the wedding bonnet.

(Aren't you going to let one of those furry friends pick the winning name again, M?)

  2. Molly and Freddy are most offended by that last remark, D. Furry friends indeed!

    Good luck in the draw.

  3. This is me being someone else! I'm leaving a comment on behalf of Margaret P who is still having problems with Google.

So, here you are, Margaret, duly entered in the bonnet.

  4. How generous of you! I'd love to entered into the bonnet. I'm currently coveting quite a few of the new look virago modern classics so this draw is perfect...

  5. Good luck, Logophile.

The new look is growing on me but I love the beautiful greens more.

  6. I won't enter the draw because I couldn't in good conscience have you ship to Canada! I do have to comment and say, though - that is a fabulous hat, and you have a very lovely blog!

  7. Welcome, tattytiara, and thank you for the nice comment. I would be delighted to post the book to Canada if you were to win. Shall I put your name into the hat?

  8. You are far too kind, and far too gracious for me to decline. If I win, though, I'll need a return address on the package. It's always fun sharing thank yous with book lovers!

  9. Your name is in! I've just been looking at your fabulous owl pictures. My son was passionate about owls throughout his childhood so I'll be sending him over for a visit.

  10. Oh thank you - it's very hard to take a bad picture of a beautiful owl. Not only do they not have a "bad side", but they're world class when it comes to sitting perfectly still!

  11. Well, M, to throw my name into the hat is a great temptation , but I am trying to cut down on aquiring new books until I have read what I have already go - or have at least reduced the piles to managable proportions. I too enjoyed tattytiara's owls .

  12. Is that a 'no' then, Crinny, or shall I put you in anyway?!

  13. Can you count me in too, please? I've seen the film of Enchanted April but not read the book. I didn't actually realise Elizabeth von Arnim was the author of Enchanted April to be honest. I do have one book on my tbr mountain by her - Elizabeth and her German Garden, which I really must get around to.

  14. Good luck, Cath! This is the third of Elizabeth von Arnim's books and a delightful read. Did you see the 1992 film with Josie Lawrence and Joan Plowright? I think I might try to get hold of a copy to watch again as my memory has been stirred.

  15. Yes, Maureen, that's the film I saw. I'm a bit of a Michael Kitchen fan and he's lovely in it. I like the 'Summer in Italy' feel to it too, even though I've never been to Italy.

  16. I love the "bonnet." It thrills me that people still wear hats such as this!

  17. The hat was for my daughter's wedding and I may never have another opportunity to wear it. Of course, I might just get one of those special invitations to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, so I'll keep it, just in case!

  20. Hi M - rather loathe to confess that I've not read this book - so please pop my name in the bonnet, if you would be so kind.

  21. Great to see you back, J. I hope you had a very restful, bookful break. Good luck in the draw.

  23. Hi Ikkinlala and welcome. I've just been over to see your socks and they look fascinating!

I'll put you in the draw. Good luck.

  24. Well M, one is never too old to learn! After a month or so of struggling to understand why my 'sent' messages were no longer being kept (as I thought) I realized that my calendar was a month behind. Now what does that tell you about me! now if I had a beloved son....
I see you put me in. Thanks. I think thats what I wanted. It would seem that not only am I behind but also rather indecisive. Good job I live a retired life!
