Tonight's episode of Lark Rise to Candleford is the last of the series. Anyone who has read my previous posts on the subject knows that I have been less than kind about the adaptation of this much-loved trilogy. I stand by those views but I accept that many people who have not read the books beforehand are thoroughly enjoying this gentle, undemanding, Sunday evening entertainment.
While staying with my daughter just before the birth of the gorgeous Amelia, I watched an episode with her. She has enjoyed it from the start and, not having read the Flora Thompson books, just sees it as a bit of light costume drama. If you are planning to watch it this evening, as I'm sure my daughter will be, enjoy it! I'll be waiting for what I hope will be a better adaptation of the Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
I'll be watching it with my 10-year-old son this evening. He's enjoyed it enormously - the first time he's watched a 'costume drama' which doesn't involve knights or soldiers or any kind of swashbuckling, probably. But, like you, I am looking forward far more eagerly to the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, which has had rave advance reviews, and the author seems completely bowled over by its visitual beauty and verisimilitude, so I have high hopes. Desperately sad that it's Minghella's last film, but I'm hoping it will be a worthy high point to remember him by. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThe No. 1 Detective Agency I loved unreservedly. I thought it was excellent and am delighted to hear there are to be more next year. So sad about Anthony Minghella though.
