More on the disappearing pictures

Since December, when I reported that many pictures had disappeared from my archived posts, yet more pictures have vanished. Judging by the number of visitors to that particular post, I think the same problem is occurring on blogs all over the world.

Now a friendly sleuth ( blogging friend erp - see sidebar) has traced the source of the problem to the latest Mozilla Firefox upgrade. It seems that the pictures are still visible on Internet Explorer. Another computing wizard (Stephen, also on the sidebar) is looking into the problem for us. I'll keep you posted on developments.

  1. You'll be amused that the picture at the top of this blog has gone missing too.

  2. Well, M, if it's any consolation I don't think Mac users like me have problems accessing your archived pictures, nor the current ones. (Unless someone tells us otherwise ...) Apple's default browser is Safari, which seems very picture friendly.

  3. Strange things seem to be happening in other areas and I am wondering if the problems lie with Google. I have two separate lists of blogs that I regularly visit on my sidebar - one list of live feeds, showing the name of their latest posts and the other a list of simple links.

In some but not all cases, the posts on the live feed list show Random Distractions as linking directly to them. This was most embarrassing when I looked at the comments on Bryan Appleyard's discussions on Atheism and found my post on D for Diced Vegetables in the 'Links to this post'.

    What next, I wonder?

  4. While a browser fault was one possible explanation it's unlikely to be the case here since the photo Maureen lost was not viewable on IE, Firefox or Safari.

The fault almost certainly lies somewhere within Google, either at the Blogger end or with Picasa. If it's the latter the best way to eliminate the problem would be to use another hosting site for your pictures; Flickr is the obvious one and there's a good series of posts here about how to insert Flickr photos into blog posts.

At the Blogger end, I would be inclined to suspect html corruption. If anyone currently has a post that has this problem and is happy to mail me the html code for the post in question pasted into a word document, I'd be very interested to see it.

  5. Stephen, using Firefox, I got page cannot be found, when I clicked your "email me" link. I'll switch to IE and report back.

  6. I got the same, page cannot be found, in IE.

  7. Perhaps blogger comment won't accept mailto: links; either that or it's another html error! My email is stephen.blogger and it's a gmail address. Thanks

  8. No problem here. I have a Mac and I used Firefox exclusively.

  9. Hello M - I've paid a few more ad hoc visits (still using Safari) to your archives and am not having any problems. All pictures showing perfectly. Or am I just lucky?!

  10. D, would you mind clicking on the 'coastal walks' label on the side bar to see if those pictures are all visible? When I checked to make sure that I hadn't already done a post on an Ilfracombe walk, about half the photos were missing. Thanks, M.

  12. I think that the post where M first noticed the problem has the original html intact as is the picture on Picasa. This means that anyone using a browser that doesn't have this problem will see the picture shown twice at the end of the post, rather than the one and then the X icon. I have looked this morning with IE and it is still refusing to display.

    Who can see both?

  13. I see the newly inserted picture and a frame for the missing one.
