The Last Leviathan

All fellow readers of 60goingon16 will be familiar with the Greenpeace campaign to lobby the Japanese government to give up their whaling activities in the Southern Ocean. If you haven't already followed D's link to send your own whale off to join the pod, I urge you to do so.

'Save the whale' was the slogan on everyone's t-shirt in the 1980s. Pressure groups formed throughout the UK and internationally and my husband, the MM, represented the NGOs at the meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Brighton in 1982, when real progress was made towards the introduction of a moratorium on whaling for commercial purposes. Some nations have flouted the international agreements or found spurious excuses to carry on whaling, Japan being the most significant threat to the survival of the great whales.

Diane has been searching for a piece of whale music and had to settle for a lovely song about dolphins. Here is a song about the last of the great whales, D, the Dubliners' version of the Last Leviathan. Keep up the good work!
