I discovered last night that this gorgeous book has been adapted for the screen. It is to be shown on BBC television at Easter and the rest of the world will see it later.
In view of my recent posts on the quality of television adaptations, I feel rather sheepish about saying how delighted I was to catch this news. I do hope the film does justice to the book. These pictures of Alexander McCall Smith suggest that he is happy with the production.
I'm just off to a weekend conference and I think I might smuggle my copy of No 1 Ladies in with me; I hope I don't laugh at inappropriate moments during the keynote presentations!
I really hope so too, M. I adore the books but must confess that I didn't think it translated at all well into radio. Whereas the repetitiousness and formality of the dialogue and the langorous pace of the action are so engaging on the written page, I found them verging on the tedious in audio form (and R4's Dead Ringers did a hilarious spoof which entirely the the nail on the head!). I am hoping that, with the visual aspect of Botswana to add to the experience, the film will gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI thought the radio production was a mistake too, J. I do hope the film doesn't disappoint. I've just packed the first book to take to Torquay, at least I'll have the pleasure of re-reading the series.
ReplyDeleteSince my Bloglines sees fit to only pick up comments and not posts from RD, it's fun to read comments and then try to guess to what they refer.
ReplyDeletem. Torquay? Was that another post I missed?
For some reason I thought this was scheduled for January and have been wondering why it hasn't shown up. Thanks for clearing that up and for the link to the pics. Can't wait for this but Easter is a nice time of year so that's fine.
ReplyDeleteI'm just back from my weekend in Torquay, e. I attended a conference there and had some doubts about the choice of speakers but it turned out to be an excellent weekend and I had not time to read at all!
ReplyDeleteI simply love these books and am so looking forward to this adaptation. I find AM Smith a delightful writer and his Sunday Philosophy Club books also fascinating as the Scotland Street series. he certainly is prolific. Hooray say I
ReplyDeleteHi Brooksideelaine - I can guess where you come from! I'm really enjoying re-reading the Mma Ramotswe books and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a really good film.
