It's getting close

I've done it! This morning I fought my way into the box room, located the right box and unpacked all the Christmas cloths, quilts, place mats and stockings. The tree was trimmed last night and the house has been decked with tinsel and lights. I'm officially in Christmas mode, although the wretched head cold is limiting the Christmas mood. Still, all that red, green and gold is so cheering and the grog helps!

  1. Grog? What happened to the hot chocolate? Small wonder you don't rule the world anymore.

  2. Hot chocolate soothes most ills, Peter, but head colds need a little extra help.

  3. Well done. We're still undecorated, I'm afraid. Though there are trees aplenty on the island, we only ever buy our trees from some farming friends who live about 15 miles away, and we simply ran out of time to make the trip today. Tomorrow we WILL, and then we'll be all 'official', too. At least I've marzipanned the cake today . . . so some progress on the home front at last! Lok after yourself and get rid of that cold, M.

  5. Thanks, Juliet. I think lots of grog should crack it.
I've no reason to feel smug about being ahead of myself with the preparations - my children are grown and flown. It's amazing how much easier it is to complete tasks without family interruptions.

  6. Oh dear, I feel a real cheat. I'm not spending Christmas here, so the house still resembles a tip - no guests to worry about, you see. It looks as if I have passed on the Christmas entertaining baton to my dear daughter. And I must admit, I'm looking forward to Christmas dog walks along the Thames, seeing friends and catching up with my lovely sister and all her children and grandchildren.

But I have put up seasonal wreath on front door (v tasteful, of course, no chav decorations here, I'll have you know) and frosted twiggy garlands over the big old fireplaces. The dining room is a bit like Santa's grotto at the mo'. Presents everywhere. And wrapping paper. And sellotape, And labels.

In the meantime, the younger labrador made a run for the bag where the doggie treats were stashed and has scoffed all the Christmas-tree shaped rawhide chews. So there'll be nothing under the tree for him or his chums!

I think I might just crack open a bottle of the Christmas fizz . . . a day or two early.

  7. Good for you, D, for the fizz and the handing on of the baton.
Today, for the first time in 34 years, my husband decided he would help me wrap the presents. It went quite well until we came to share the sellotape, apparently the world is divided into those who fold the end over and those who lose it. We are totally incompatible! Peace on earth if someone can find a solution.

  9. It didn't solve the sellotape problem, J, but the shared laughter restored peace!

  10. GOOD!

The Sellotape thing is, I fear, like toothpaste-tube-squeezing methods and the destination of dirty socks, just one of those differences which remain forever unresolved . . .

  11. I just can't think why it has taken 34 years to discover this basic human difference.
